Happy Anniversary

It’s the third anniversary of when I moved into my little rented house this weekend. Tomorrow I have to give my two month’s notice to leave. Assuming that the house that I’m buying doesn’t fall through, the transition should be relatively painless- otherwise I will be homeless at the end of July.

It’s cliched but I suppose I could say “Its been the best of times, its been the worst of times” about living here. The good times have all been milestones in my personal life, the bad times have been a mixture of feeling wretched because of personal things and (mainly) because of petty vandalism that has affected me here. When I look back it is the negative things which will mark out my time here, including:

1. Someone pissing against my front door and it leaking into my porch (after I’d spent the afternoon cleaning it)

2. Someone firing an air rifle at my car windscreen and leaving a bullet hole thus causing me to pay for a whole new windscreen

3. The joyriders who crashed a stolen car into the telegraph pole outside next door bringing down the phone lines

4. The people who only yesterday knocked some bricks out of my garden wall

5. Having my front windows pelted with eggs and tomatoes

Yet despite all these, I’m still a little reluctant to leave this place. It’s the first place I have lived for any substantial length of time since I first left home in 1998- since then I’ve flitted all over the place. I guess this is really the first place I thought of as my home rather than temporary accomodation in between moving onto someplace else. Since '98 I’ve lived in 6 other places before this one, never staying in any of them much beyond a year. Looking back I wish I’d had more stability, still, can’t change the past.

I might have to scratch my initials into the brickwork somewhere so that when I come back in many years time I will still have a permanent reminder of my time here. Or I might pelt the front of the house with eggs.

Maybe it’s true, that you can never go back...
