Viewing Figures

According to Wikipedia, the finale of Will & Grace was watched by 18 Million people in America last month. The show debuted in September 1998 and has earned critical acclaim and $$$ for its stars over eight seasons.

I started my career in October 1998 somewhat more modestly and have yet to garner any rewards, not even a Golden Globe nomination! Not rolling in millions either! Back in 1998 I was fresh out of Uni, looked like a geek, acted like a geek and knew nothing of the world. I kinda wonder if I was emotionally retarded by about 5 years given it wasn’t until about three years ago that I really felt that I began to live my life but by then it was too late for many things.

Work has been the major part of my life since I started- arriving early, leaving late and its been dominated by long commutes. I have little idea what I would do with all the extra time if I was home by 6pm every evening, although getting home by 8pm is more realistic. Maybe that’s the problem and I use it as an excuse.

Whilst Will & Grace peaked around season 4, I think I am yet to reach my peak. Not that I have a choice as I’m not playing a character (usually) and there’s no script here.

If there’s one thing the last eight years have taught me is that I need to put myself first more often. In my eagerness to get ajob I took the first one that was offered, that eventually took me away from London and my friends. Looking back I barely existed for 18 months living in relative seclusion. This was followed by 18 months in Ireland which was a mixed bag of emotion then back to London, a change of jobs and back to the present. Things are getting better, slowly...
