The last few days...
I’ve been a busy bee. I hit almost all my freakcity deadlines (still have to finish the events stuff, but that’s all) and the launch went way smoother than I’d expected. There’s a few bugs — and there’ll be a bug reporting toy created sometime this week to add your bugs to. I need to finish integrating bits of the preview functionality into the new forum post display object, as well as doing the same for search and bookmarks, that means that the forum post display object will be easier to maintain and be consistent across all bits of the site. I also need to go through the other styles with a fine tooth comb and find any bits that look stupid/wrong and fix them (well, on most of them anyways...or I’d be deleting the entire sunin theme :P)It’s now possible to do polls really simply. They display like this:
poll:3
And work entirely using the wonder of ajax. If you’re not logged in, you’ll simply see the results, if you*are* logged in, you’ll be able to vote. I’ve yet to write the fallback stuff for it so that people without javascript can access it...but soon...
You can now add comments to people’s profiles and pictures (cynds thinks we’ve gone all myspace – snigger)
There’s a vote function on the forums now per post...it’s a bit like thumbs but not thumbs. Each post starts with 0, a negative vote is -1 and a positive vote is +1, so you can see if people agree/disagree with you.
Most importantly from a back end perspective, I’ve created a whole load of code that should (in theory) mean most of the site can be switched between SQL Server and access/jet database back ends. Although having switched all of the data to SQL Server on xmas eve and having had nothing explode, I think we’ll be sticking with it. For the most part it seems much faster.
Now...I just need to write some stored procedures for the forums to speed them up a little 😉
Busiest day ever on the site yesterday. Possibly to do with my massive spam of everyone on NYE, but hey. Giggle. At one point there were over 30 people on at once and nothing slowed or exploded.
I have some tweaks to the blogs to do soon.
Went to Salisbury with Danny on Friday — got a text from Chris whilst on the train saying he was in London. Bah. Timing sucks.
Salisbury is terribly dull when it’s raining and dingy. Went to the Chicago Rock Café there where we first of all giggled at a waiter throwing Danny’s drink all over himself and then secondly got served by the gayest waiter in the universe. He had mouldy and missing teeth and lisped. It was disturbing...one expensiveburger (and 1.5 hours. Jesus. Someone teach them about service!) later we were full and wandering again. At this point it started pissing down, so we headed back to the station. En route we popped our head into a sex shop where we were ejected by a very rude man “You’re not fucking 18. Get out”. Giggle. The perils of dating someone who looks younger than he is. Got back to Gill as it started to absolutely shit it down. Danny had to cycle home. Whoopsie. Texted Chris to see if he was still in London but no reply, so headed back home instead.
NYE was spent at Owen's getting passively stoned (grr) and watching drunktards being drunktards. Counted down to new years along with Jools Holland. Managed to post to FC at 00:00 Jan 7th (yes, I*am* that sad) and generally wombled about from room to room. Chatted to a very very very drunken Danny (“I’m on water coz I can’t drink any more. I’ve passed out like 5 times or something”). Headed home at about 2am via a bus to Stratford (now THAT was terrifying) and then a ten minute wait for a DLR train on a cold wet platform in the company of a platform announcer on crack. Who as well as tell drunken people off for messing about IN FRONT OF THE YELLOW LINE OMFG!!11 then proceeded to dedicate the evening to James Brown, the godfather, who influenced many many people, yada<
