An Interesting day at work

Snipped from www.docklandsboy.co.uk

It’s incredible just how sensitive we can be to our sleeping patterns, I had 5 days off between bouts of nightshifts and volunteered myself for a daytime shift in the middle of this break. My sleeping pattern was so completely flumoxed by this that I ended up being awake for almost 28 hours, which hurt a bit. The shift itself was a nice and simple one though, I got called into a management monthly meeting too which was quite interesting, nice to see a bit more of what goes on around the office. Being able to see the relevance of everything we are doing day to day is a great motivator.

I’m tasked with building a new monitoring server to add to our cluster based on nagios. Getting the new version to talk to the older ones is proving to be a complete nightmare but I’m sure I’ll figure it out. Yesterday was topped out by a truely spectacular thunderstorm. I’ve not actually had one since I’ve moved to the tenth floor so it was very dramatic. Hearing the rain crashing down on the roof, feeling the boom of the thunder and seeing the lightning stretching out for miles across London was a pretty special experience. I am definitely looking forwards to the next one. I even managed to get some video footage of the storm with some good lightning strikes too, I shall be uploading it once I’ve had a chance to edit it down a bit, selected highlights,etc...
